I was wondering if two like minded teams can merge into a new seperate team, and keep their past production intact.

Can somebody give me an accurate answer?

I really don't think so, you can always just create a new Team but the way BOINC is set up is that the Credits will stay with the Team that it was earned with.

The answer is both yes, and no. (And Yes!)

These are the steps you would have to take in order to combine the teams.

1. Select a new "Team Leader".
2. Convince the existing Team Leaders to send out an E-Mail to all existing team members notifying them of the merge, and what to do about it. It would be wise to WRITE or print out the email addresses so that they are not lost in step 3.
3. Once all members have been notified, Disband BOTH teams completely.
4. Have the new "Team Leader" Create the new team. It's better to do this before step 2, unless the new Team Leader is an existing team leader, in which case this is impossible. In that case, please keep the time between step 2 and 4 as small as possible.

IIRC, that was changed? I've never switched teams, staying loyal to The Planetary Society, the team that STARTED IT ALL.

First off I don't think you can actually just Disband a Team, everybody can quit the Team but the Team name & Credits will still be there as far as I know. I tried all of this one time @ the Seti Project and in the end all the Credit were lost from the original Team. I can still go back and bring up the original Team & the Credits are still there even though nobodys on the Team.

The only way it might be possible would be to notify the Project by E-Mail of your intentions and maybe they could do something. But if the Project's allowed that then you would be opening up a whole new can of worms...IMO

Soon you would have 2 or 3 or more Teams wanting to Merge just to enhance their position in the Rankings. Thats why BOINC was set up the way it was, to keep the Credits where they were earned.

Um, since when has TPS been doing protein science?

If it weren't for TPS, SETI@Home would probably not have obtained it's funding.

Without SETI@Home, I doubt there would be a market for distributed computing powerful enough to drive what we now enjoy.

TPS, while completely unrelated, and unknowingly.. may have ignited something greater than just the Search for ET.

Now, because of BOINC, our machines are doing much more than just searching radia data for signs of intelligence.

David Anderson commented on this a few times, but his statements could be perceived as self-serving.

However, I don't think we would be here if it wasn't for TPS. Therefore - I shall always crunch for them.

Nono.. there are management functions for the team leaders. You can completely disband the team. Although - You will not be able to apply the credits from one team to the other. Kinda sucks IMHO.

Technically, the project owners can do unlimited management of the credit and team system. Convincing them to do so.. is another story.

See the wiki.

No we cannot (checked at R@H, S@H, CPDN)

Only managment feature we have are
- Edit team info
- Remove inactive members
- View team email addresses
- Change founder

(at Seti-Classic we could disband though)

Exactly, I've Founded a Team at almost all of the Projects & no where do I see that I have the capability to Disband the Teams that I have Founded.

So, if you make a type-o in team name, no one can change it?
And if 2 teams made type-o's and both actually were going for the same name to start with, nothing could be done?

Just another view on what you want done.

The Team Founders can always Edit the Team Name to correct any Typo's & the Credits stay with the Team. But I am almost sure that the First Team to Edit the Team Name to the Correct Spelling would be the only Team to be able to use that Name.

Team names and details can be changed (which is very useful I must say :)
But this is not actually part of the 'managment' functions.

Which actually makes Aarons suggestion a little easier as in one team changes name and then every one from the other team jumps into it, but this does not merge the 'whole' stats

The ability to merge teams is loosely incompatible with the idea that credit once given stays where it is put.

You can't storm out of a team in a huff taking your credit with you. But that means also that if teams could merge then some anti-merger members would be stuck with having contributed where they didn't want to.

On balance though, I agree the ability to merge teams would be good, but there would sure be some complaints if it happened

Absolutely so.

BOINC makes the SETI project a success for humankind even if you guys never tap into that phone call home ;-)

And you aren't the only TPS team member giving time to other projects by the looks of it:

btw I'd say you are being too modest when you say the outcome was unrelated to the TPS. Unrelated to TPS goals, maybe; but strongly related to the kind of outlook many TPS members might be expected to have.
