This project is attracting international support. That's great because there are more computers in the whole world than there are in the US.

This does raise some issues.

First, time zones. When you announced dowtime recently you gave the time in PST - I guess most North Americans will know what that is, but it would be friendly to give the time in both your local time and UTC, which is the only international standard

Second time of year. For some, Spring 2006 comes around March, for others around September. When talking about future plans it is therefore helpful to use month names rather than seasons. If months seem too precise maybe use "First quarter" or suchlike

Date format I think you know - we Brits think that 3/1 /2006 is the 3rd of Jan, North Americans think it is 1st March. It is helpful to use 3-Jan-2006 or Mar-1-2006 then we all know what you mean.

Language. For example in this thread a French participant is inviting members for a French team. It is polite of him to post the invitation in English, but should we expect that?

Other projects have been enhanced, in my opinion, by the occasioanl threads in French, German, Czech, etc even when I can't myself understand those postings.
Personally I'd like people here to feel free to talk amongst themselves in their own language, especially when it is a topic like recruitment to a nation-based or language-based team. But I am a newbie here, what do the project staff think? What do the longer-standing members think?

Time & date are probably the most annoying things.

Use the 'month name' and all problems are solved.

Time, should certainly be UTC* as well, as that is standard time and then people can even cater for daylight saving etc.

Languages, personaly I think people should use whatever language they want, bit it English, American, French, Spanish, Welsh. And certainly drop to their native tongue if it makes it easier for someone to help them, OK, I cannot understand what they say but hey that is my problem.



*UTC, well given the whole forum and stats run off UTC for me, it would keep consistency ;)

I'm a newbie, but have to concur w/ River. Many boards I've been on have had foreign language threads. I peronally enjoy those where English is mixed in so I can play too [blows a kiss to some Romanian, Russian and Serb crunchers elsewhere]. However the board format may not support the symbols necessary for some languages. One gentleman found his hometown showed up on my side as mostly numbers and placeholders!

I agree with what is being said here. Anything that we can do that would increase the total number of BOINC users is a great benefit to the entire human race. While I have not seen any stats recently, I am sure that it is only a small fraction of the PC's in the world that are part of BOINC or any other system like BOINC. Just think what advances we could make if we had 1, 2,3, 5, or 10% of the world's PC's working on these and other similair projects.

I agree with people being able to have their own threads in their native language. While most of it I can not read, I do enjoy seeing people communicating in different languages.

Look at the furor caused this past 10 days. Attracting more hosts is great but the project better be prepared in advance for the work load. AND afterwards the smallest mis-step and all those wonderful hosts migrate elsewhere.

A sudden jump is only likely when another project closes (FaD for example). In the normal course of events stesdy growth and progressive degradation is more likely.

By the time that many people are contributing to DC projects, there will be far more projects from which to choose - just look at the way BOINC is accruing projects, and as always, there are actually *far* more non-BOINC projects than BOINC. One response to gridlock will be that people will start to preferentially choose projects closer to home in network terms, which may or may not mean closer geography.

It was offered at the bottom of this page which a client recently had problems with: http://asgard.tgorod.ru/libri.php3?cont=_kirp2
and the translation to english doesn't leave you with a perfect english text; although it seemed to do as good or better than Babelfish translations. Since I can't read Russian, I can't compare the quality of the translation.

I think this dynamic is starting to change. Now that there is significant awareness of BOINC, there are quite a few projects in the wings. Granted, the historical list is still large. But, to tap into the very large BOINC base of computers I think we will see more adoption, or if not direct adoption, dual hosting of projects (like WCG).

My bet is we are going to see two or three BOINC like engines (like WCG's native, which I think they inherited/bought from UD?) with a healthy cross-pollination
