Sid, I'm definitely not doing a Windows OS reset. Maybe I need to, but I'm not going to. I've aborted all waiting tasks and reset project Rosetta. Again. The Masterfile download succeeded. I have already checked and rechecked my hosts file and it's definitely set up ok and in the right location and with no extension. And I've worked my way through every setting I can find in Norton and double-checked that directories are whitelisted and that boinc and boincmgr are allowed. Now I'm waiting to see if any task will come down successfully. Maybe by morning. ![]() ![]() |

Seemed to me that People with Windows machines are unable to complete the downloading of tasks. Certainly was my experience. Someone suggested earlier that Windows 10 computers are particularly vulnerable, though I have 2 remote W10 PCs that are running fine and a W11 laptop that's fine too. It's just weird. ![]() ![]() |

I currently have 14 completed rosetta tasks (10mrredo_10_hallucinated) that won't upload, showing status pending project backoff. I also have 7 new rosetta tasks (beta 6.06) that are stuck downloading and approaching the task deadline. ![]() |

I also have 7 new rosetta tasks (beta 6.06) that are stuck downloading and approaching the task deadline. When I had a series of tasks (from WCG instead of Rosetta) that didn't upload, I finally enabled GPU tasks from PrimeGrid. Once some GPU tasks were downloaded and the BOINC hold on connecting to WCG expired, those over 40 tasks from WCG finally uploaded. It's far from obvious why this helped. |

It happened that the WCG task finally uploaded because WCG had "server unavailable" issues again and they fixed the problems (for now). |

I aborted the new tasks that wouldn't download, and as soon as I did that the stalled upload transfers of completed tasks disappeared as well so maybe it was the broken new task downloads that was holding everything up. ![]() |

Something new is definitely broken. Back before things started falling apart and the project stopped caring, there would be 6,000 to 10,000 users with work. Then it dropped to 5,000 to 8,000. As the issues increased and weren't resolved, it's dropped down to around 3.000 to 5,000. Then around the 28th of last month, it started falling even further. It's now down to around 2,000 to 2,500. It's F&^^# ridiculous that there are millions of Tasks there to be processed, but only 2,000 to 2,5000 users are able to actually get any work & return it compared to when the project was actually functional and 10,000+ users were able to get work. While there are researchers still sending out batches of work to process, it's only because they don't realise that the Rosetta project has been abandoned by those responsible for it. Checkout the Per app user count graph (second from bottom on Lefthand side). Grant Darwin NT |

The hosts file on *all* default installation of Windows computers is in the C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/ folder and most of the time the file has a hidden and/read-only attribute. In the above example replace the "/" (forward slash) with a backslash...The forums here don't allow backslash. You need to use a plain text editor such as Windows notepad to make changes to the file. |

So, it's a DNS problem??? Adding the first line to my /etc/hosts fixed my stuck download on macOS. 128.95.160.156 boinc-files.bakerlab.org |

Probably. But then again Cloudflare pops up with numbing regularity telling me that the site I'm trying to get to is broken/doesn't exist/whatever/needs to verify that I really wanted to get there. But it's not their problem, even though within 30 seconds things are working again, I refuse to add the word "normally" to that. ![]() |

Sid, No change for several days on my main PC (but all other laptops and PCs still running fine) I had a few tasks trying to download and failing each time with transient HTTP errors They passed deadline and were aborted. I took a look at Norton's Security history again and there were no messages of any kind. I looked at Boinc's transfer tab and was surprised to see, while task-related files were no longer there, the database file, rosetta_beta_6.06 and graphics program files and a font file were still waiting to download I retried downloading them and it didn't work again I searched for where these files were usually downloaded to and located a folder that contained each of the files with 0 byte length I decided to delete them, to see if it made a difference. It didn't. This morning I took a quick look at what WCG tasks were running (availability has been inconsistent) and was surprised to see 3 Rosetta tasks running. Somehow, overnight, the 4 Rosetta files had successfully downloaded. Why they succeeded when all previous attempts failed, I don't know. I suspect it has something to do with deleting the 0 byte length files as if they were touched with some faulty flag somewhere down the line, but I'm guessing. Slightly backtracking, before all the above, I did discover I had two hosts files - one with no extension and one with a txt extension. Both had the right info in them, but I deleted the txt file anyway and doing so had no effect in any case. I'm hoping this has resolved my issues, but I'll wait to see if I get a further batch of Rosetta tasks before feeling confident in any way. ![]() ![]() |
