Sorry for the off topic post, but I don't know where else to ask. I decided to look into the news about running F@H on a GPU. I tried to go to the forums to see what people were saying...but I get only a blank page. It's been this way for several days now.

I've tried with several different browsers, with several diferent machines. Nothing anywhere on their site about their fourm being down, and no email addresses to ask/notify. They all seem to point back to the forum for help. Circular problem.

So, what's up?

One of my team mates has looked into the GPU client. There is a thread on our board here if any of you can read Danish, I know there are some here that can.

The gist of it is that it requires some CPU, about 30% - 50%, and doesn't work at all if you are running CPU intensive tasks on your CPU. His plan was to run BOINC on the CPU and F@H in the GPU.

The link in the first post of the thread is to the download page where you can get the Beta F@H GPU client if that is of any help.

That doesn't, of course, answer your question concerning their forums! To me, the forums link also shows a picture of a white rabbit in a snow field.

*** EDIT ***

The link to the download page is here so you don't have to look at our forum if you don't want too!

Not kept up so did some reading (I don't do F@H) here's the direct link to the GPU area but it also doesn't work, probably just some downtime (do stanford run the forums yet or are they still done by a 3rd party ?)

Though strangly the FAQ's (what I was reading) was updated yesterday (7th) http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-ATI.html

Google cache to relive some of that anticipation though ;-)

So if you have a dual-core machine, I guess you could have one core working BOINC and the other F@H. Also, does the speed of the processor have any real impact to the speed of the F@H when running on the GPU? If not, it would be a good way to use older/slower machines. Also, I wonder how memory size/bus speed plays into this since the GPU cards have their own memory.

If you had a dual core and set BOINC to use one only, then I guess F@H would run in the other. Point then, is if you did so, one core is 100% busy BOINC'ing, the GPU is busy Folding and the other core is only being used 30-50%.

The fact that the CPU is still being used 30-50% must be significant for slow processors. I agree, it may not be as significant as it was before if you stick a throbbing monster of a graphics card on a donkey of a machine.

I'm not sure in any case as it was not me that looked at it. You could post on our message board and ask, everyone there speaks English so there'd be no problem.

The X1900 cards are pci-express only. So that limits what you can call an "older slower" machine that can run the GPU client. The GPU client is keeping the cpu usage at 100% according to task manager on a 754 pin Athlon 64 3300+ running at 2.4Ghz running XP home.

Thanks. They tell you to go to a cached page on google, and log in from there. Problem is, I don't have an account on that forum yet. And the register page has the same blank-screen problem. Aaarrrgh!

Does anyone have the email address of the F@H forum administrator?

I can't remember what my password was last changed to, so I can't log in, either. They've got word to WW about the problem. (I didn't get a response back from either of the emails I sent - using the address from the registration email - or contacting him on another forum he belongs to.) If you want to get something relayed, you should be able to find someone on one of the larger F@H teams to pass it on. (Free-DC or Anandtech were represented, and should be willing to pass on info, if you can't find a member of the MacNN team that can do it.)
If you just want to play with the GPU client, the page FluffyChicken linked to will get the client up and running. (I seem to have verified most of the problems listed on that page.)

Tried a different approach: I got a response from Vijay Pande saying he'd look into a request for setting up a temporary board for the GPU client discussions. Then we can talk about OT items like this - on a forum dedicated to the the subject. :)

Danke for all your help. I just want to get involved with F@H (again), and maybe even lay out some cash to work on the GPU angle. The inability to participate, and even communicate is frustrating. Even worse, I (we) have no way of knowing what's going on (if anything), or if they even know that the problem still exists. Anyone looking at the F@H page would conclude the problem is known, and a workaround is in place. It isn't. And there is no way to tell anyone!

Here's the temporary forum while the problems for the main forum are worked out. Please pass it on to other teams that are chomping at the bit to find out more on the GUI client.
