Not certain which Board this thread is most appropriate for, so trying here first...

I trust the opinions of fellow crunchers in the Rosetta community, so I'd ask your experiences / opinions about Deep Space Network @ Home.

I generally gravitate to life science projects, even though space exploration projects may have their own value.

I feel uncomfortable with any project that solicits monetary donations in addition to cruncing time, but do have to acknowledge science is underfunded to begin with.

If its true that data from NASA may go unprocessed, I would be willing to donate cruncing time.

Just want to know if anyone knows anything about this dc project.

Guess ya gotta go with your instincts...

Did some digging around, would "seem" to possibly be a scam.

If so, first time I've heard of one invoking the "prestige" of BOINC and Distributed Computing.

Seti@Home asks for donations, you even get a pretty star under you name there. (so you can belittle none star owners ;-)

Looking at the home page
http://hireme.geek.nz/
Seems it a person (called HireMe.geek.nz) thinking of ideas to use boinc. You'll find him/her/et in the stats.

Forgot to mention that I became aware of DSN@H because of an "advertisement" at the bottom of my BoincStats page.

Either a "smart" scam(mer), by its placement on a BOINC-related site, OR maybe it is legitimate...

IIRR BoincStats gets its ads from Google, so the smartness of the ad placement is down to Google spotting the @Home tag that appears so often on the stats pages. That means it offers no evidence either way about the legitimacy of it.

Personally, I'd prefer a project or a service to solicit money in preference to taking ads. This is a mild preference, not enough for example to make me stop using BoincStats)

If you browse with Firefox and ads bother you, you can filter them with adblock plus:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/

and the updater to it:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1136/

Filters google ads too, and you can block images as well if you don't like someone's signature :p
