i know its been said before but does rosetta@home have a copy right ? is there a place one might buy rosetta dodads like a coffee mug or t shirt if there is no copy right can someone just go have the rosetta@home and the protein logo put on something by them self???????????????

Anything, designed or "artisticly reprsented" will have a copyright implicitly by the creator of such work - at least if it's designed or created in the major "civilized" parts of the world - I'm not sure if there are any known parts of the world that hasn't got any copyright law - the US, where Rosetta originates certainly has one, so any content available on the Rosetta website, etc, is definitely covered by copyright [I'm not sure who holds the copyright of the forum content, however...].

Of course, the next question is if you can license the copyright and under what conditions... I don't know the answer to that. Maybe someone else knows? I also don't know if there's any merchendize available with Rosetta logos etc.

Noone has commisioned any dodads so far as I know. I had suggested bumper stickers as a start, but there wasn't sufficient confirmed interest. Several design ideas were brought up in that thread, and later this one.

Dr. Baker has basically said in the past that the materials on the website may be used. I was looking for his post that said that, but haven't found it so don't quote me. Making a t-shirt for your own use would certainly not be a problem. If you can think of other ways to get people to ask "What's this Rosetta thing all about anyway?", please post your ideas here.

I see that the Rosetta (protein) logo is in low-res gif format. Is it available in a higher res version? Perhaps in Adobe PageMaker/Illustrator?

I think thats the format most "dodad makers" like to see the designs in. Could be wrong though...

In fact, rather then stickers, you can get sheets of magnetic material. I'll have to look up the catalog I saw them in and see if they have a link.

ANYTHING created by ANYONE is copyrighted to the creator - if the creator is doing this as part of his/her work, the copyright may belong to the company they work for (depends on what it says in the copyright agreement). I presume that would mean University of Washington is the copyright holder for the material on this site, for example.

If you're dong this for yourself, you probably don't need to worry about breaking the copyright. If you're planning to print a million and sell them (particularly if you gain something yourself from it), you may upset someone enough to cause Rosetta to sue you for breach of the copyright - but not if you print five and give one each to your children/cousins/grandchildren or whatever. If you're planning to print millions, then you'd want a written declaration from the university and/or Dr Baker that you have the right to use the material [and it should state what you can and can't do - so that you know where you stand, such as make modifications, use it for advertising, etc, etc]
