I recently noticed how tiny the BOINC-server of rosetta@home is. How much did the hardware cost? Collecting 35-40 TFLOP/s, I compared it with the TOP500 list and found this graphic of no. 10: (it's not a desktop, it's a building!) Sure, BOINC is made for plain vanilla parallelism, but as soon as the clients can talk to each other, I'm sure a lot of people will additionally look closer. Greetings from Germany, Gunnar PS. Im still curious about the projets name 'Rosetta'. Why has it been chosen? Will it be the missing stone in understanding the alphabet of life? |

I've been in the business long enough to remember the big iron days. Interesting things, at least you colud look inside them and SEE how they worked! I wonder who plonked a minus on that? Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

I wondered about the minus vote as well. I thought this comparison was rather interesting. I think the OP has improved the wording a little. Seems like the original post was a bit more demanding about Rosetta producing an answer, and how long it's taking. It doesn't read that way anymore, so clearly it wasn't their intent. But running Rosetta@home just might! https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ |
