Greetings-- My name is Deborah Wang, and I am a reporter for KUOW, Seattle's NPR News and Information Station. I am doing a story on Rosetta@home and am looking for people in the Seattle area who are actively involved in the program. If you are interested in being interviewed for public radio, please send me an email at debwang@kuow.org (or call 206-221-7934). Let me know alittle bit about yourself, why you are interested in the program, and where you run it. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Hi Deborah!
Would you and your guys fancy a quick field trip over here to the UK?
If not I'm sure there has to be someone nearer to you in the US of A.....

Seriously - when the article is done, can you please let us all know where we can hear it or at least get a transcript?

I would love a trip to the UK! I don't think my news director would pay for the ticket, though...

I am looking for people in Seattle or within a reasonable driving distance. I am especially interested in people who are on teams, who approach this competitively, or who are very interested in the science.

Hope to hear from you! Deborah Wang, KUOW News

Deborah - you'd probably be safer stating what you consider "reasonable" driving distance than trusting to our judgement. *grin* I know that Kodiak, Alaska is a wee bit out of the "reasonable" driving range - especially as the 12 hour ferry ride from Homer or Seward isn't the puddle jump you're used to travelling to Whidbey Island.. :)

Is Bremerton, Bellingham, or Pomeroy too far?

I would say within 30-45 minutes of downtown. Bellingham? No. Bellevue? Yes.

Hopefully, each of the teams will take your request back to their own forums and ask if any of their members live near Seattle and are interested in helping increase awareness and interest in the project. Perhaps one of the highly competitive groups that are involved in one of the recent BBQs (team taunting) would explain the fun we can have in team competitions.

Deborah, clearly people would like to help, but apparently the limited geography is limiting the number of people that can offer to do it. Also, it would take a fair level of experience to feel comfortable addressing the questions you will bring up in an interview.

...or I suppose they've contacted you directly with your contact info.

Would you consider doing a phone interview?

And, just curious, would this be for your local station? Or for NPR nationally?

It's just that from the 60-70.000 Rosetta participants, very few actually check these bulletin board regularly, e.g. my esitmate is that this topic has been read by ~30 people.

We could make it sticky for a while, in the hope more people will see it.

debwang,

Actually it has been read by almost 180. But the real problem is the focused geography in the request. Rosetta has participants all over the world located on over 160 countries. You will have more luck with a phone interview than personal interviews among the user community with such a tight geographical focus. Personal interviews will work best with the actual project team.

If you want to discuss ideas on this you can contact me via e-mail as shown in this FAQ. If you have not already been in touch with some of the project people directly, I can help you there as well. I can also point you to some of the more knowledgeable users who are volunteering their computers to help the project.

Page views doesn't equal unique persons.

Everytime we click a thread, re-read what was said, or we post in it and reload etc, the "page views" counter gets incremented.

In this particular thread, I must have contributed at least 10 "views" from the current 180+ page views myself.

I have put links back to this thread on CPDN, Einstein, HashClash, LHC, PrimeGrid and QMC message boards. Let's see if anything comes from those.....

Hi Everyone--

Many thanks for your replies, and for posting my message on other message boards.

I have set up interviews with the project directors for next week, but am still looking for maybe one more person in the Seattle metro area.

The story is for our local NPR affiliate, KUOW-FM. I don't think it will air nationally.

I am not checking the message board every day, so if you would like to contact me, it's best to send me an email at debwang@kuow.org or call 206-221-7934.

Thanks again, and look forward to hearing from you!

Deborah Wang

Hello All!

Our piece on Rosetta@home aired today (07/25/06) on KUOW.org. You can find the story on our website at kuow.org/DefaultProgram.asp?ID=11130. The piece is only 4 minutes long, so apologies if it doesn't go into much detail. Thank you all for your help on this, and good luck!

Nice piece Deborah. I only wish you'd given folks info. on how to get started. I do see on the website though there is a link to Rosetta. So, I guess if they are interested, they might check there.
