I think the large overhang due to COVID-19 is gone, and they are getting back to more normal levels.
That means they will still have a lot more crunchers than work for a while.

They started out the year with 150,0000 Current GigaFLOPS, then went up to 600,000, and are now down to 333,000.
And that is probably just due to finishing up work in the buffers.

I think you are safe in going off to other projects until the next crunch occurs, or else you will need a good backup here.

Message 99473 - Posted: 1 Nov 2020, 17:33:50 UTC

Hi Everyone,
If I view Top Participants from the Computing/Statistics drop down menu, I see many of the participants have a summary of all of the projects that they are participating in and their total credits for each project. I recently joined the WCG as a backup project and have been generating a fair amount of credits since Rosetta's task hiatus, yet, I don't see that project or any summary when I click on my username (I'm not logged in when I do it so I'm anonymous).
Is there a preference I have to enable in order to see the project summary screen (like some users have) below my username when viewing Top Participants? Thanks.

I would try enabling both options on this page https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDataSharing.action

Looks like there won't be any new tasks for a while. Any other Covid-19 research options with a Raspberry Pi and Ubuntu? Won't work with WCG.

[snip]

Why would anyone 'leave' for other projects, let alone everyone?
Because people join projects to do work for them. If there is no work, then why bother remaining attached to the project? Might as well do work for one that has work to do.

Looks like fewer and fewer of the new users know how to attach the same computer to more than one BOINC project at the same time, so they can stay attached to Rosetta@home while attaching to some new project.

Thanks but that one didn't work either. Rosetta@home might be the only option.

Why would anyone actively detach from a project just because it’s temporarily out of work?
Some do it if it's a few days, others weeks, still others months.
Of course in situations where the project announces what is going on, people are less likely to detach from it.

Anyone who does so after a few days has no interest in the project

Agreed. I only detach when boincstats confirms the project is properly dead, usually after some word from the project itself.
That said, from the experience of seeing people arrive from other projects, I don't doubt for a minute there are some decidedly odd people around who might do these things.
Sometimes I even think 'better off gone'...

I follow @UWProteinDesign and @WCGrid on twitter.
The idea either project might have ended is as risible as the possibility of finding out little green men are sending us radio signals

Try the Project SIDockTest http://188.68.219.141/sidocktest/ they have Covid-19 tasks right now, not a million but some.

Yeah – the certificate used for HTTPS on their BOINC Web server expired at the end of September. The browser panic warning seems a bit over-the-top for what is essentially an administrative oversight; I highly doubt that “someone’s trying to trick you or steal any information”. It’s been reported in their forums.

In any event, Ibercivis seems to have even less work available than Rosetta at the moment. They released a paper at the end of September, and there’s a comment from August on one of their project pages that they had stopped issuing work for the time being and were hoping to get going again in September – but all remains quiet in their forum thread about that

Fair on all counts.
Plus, given there's no work there now, and hasn't been for months longer than here, any mention of them is without any practical purpose.
Interesting to know, but nothing more than that

TN-Grid http://gene.disi.unitn.it/test/ was doing Covid tasks but I don't know if they are at the moment but they do have a bunch of tasks. The code is on the homepage if you aren't already signed up there.

Ta - some work there, but just that little too late as I've just been shocked to discover some tasks here (for the moment at least)
I forgot what they looked like, but I've managed to fill all my buffers after a rapid refill.
Hope they last for everyone else

If you are in need of some diversion, here is a new project.

It is small, but could grow.

I've seen a couple of references to the sidocktest project. Visiting the site, it lacks any information about who or what is behind the facade. It is for that reason, I did not connect. Is it a respected university lab, is it a small time jerk using the "right sort of words to get people interested" in running their get rich scheme, how can you tell.....
