I'm not sure how likely this is going to be, but what are the odds of BOINC and/or Rosetta@home using Antminers for number-crunching? Or are they not designed for this kind of work? :) |

NEVER. Each type of ASIC (Application-specific integrated circuit) "chips" are created for ONE specific type if computation(s) and can NOT be used as a general purpose CPU. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) /ˈeɪsɪk/, is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use. For example, a chip designed to run in a digital voice recorder or a high-efficiency Bitcoin miner is an ASIC. Application-specific standard products (ASSPs) are intermediate between ASICs and industry standard integrated circuits like the 7400 series or the 4000 series. Antminers are one type of ASIC for "the virtual currency" bit coins. |

Science will never be one algorithm over and over again. If anything, something like gridcoin is the ultimate ASIC free cryptocurrency. |
