Message 16033 - Posted: 12 May 2006, 13:19:01 UTC - in response to Message 16028.

can you unsticky some of those old threads in number crunching.

there's a threads referring to rosetta 5.01. Since we're on 5.13, I don't think it's really necessary anymore.

I am always looking for things to remove from the sticky lists for obvious reasons. But due to the size of some peoples working queues, it takes a few days after a software release before all of the Work Units from a previous version get reported back. For this reason the error reporting threads are allowed to sink if they go for two days or so without a posting. I had actually already released the 5.01 thread, and reports started coming in again. It should be gone by tonight or tomorrow. This problem has been made worse by the rapid release of a series of versions in a very short time. Hopefully things will settle down for a while now.

I am also thinking about doing something more along the lines of the New index sticky with links to important thread instead of sticking all of them. That way if a high use thread were to sink out of sight people could still find it.

The real problem is that the forum software does not have many tools to work with for informational postings. But your suggestion is a good one.

Message 16158 - Posted: 13 May 2006, 13:50:25 UTC

I received an e-mail today from please-do-not-reply@boinc.bakerlab.org . The subject line was "A letter to Rosetta@home crunchers".
The body of the e-mail was blank. There was absolutely no content. I suspect that a lot of people received the same thing. Was this important information? Can you send it again?

It was a newsletter with updates about the project and the upcoming CASP competition.

It was in HTML format so to view it you would have to have HTML display turned on in your email system or save the document and open it with a browser. In some cases your e-mail provide may filter HTML attachments. We are planning to post the same message on the website. I can see if it can be resent to you if you wish.

I receive and view HTML formatted mail all of the time with no problems. I'm nearly certain that it was blank. I'll read it when it's posted on the website.

I think I have found a place to send a bit of info without wastin to much of your time. I have two computers both Macintosh. The desktop is currently happily crunching away using boinc manager 5.4.9. The laptop (with intell processors) also with 5.4.9 always fails to download projects with the message from server:platform 'i686-apple-darwom' not found. This is with the default boinc prefs.

Art,

There is currently no support for the Intel Macs. There is talk of compiling something but it is not here yet. That is what it is trying to tell you with the message "i686... Not found". I no of no way to force it to run the PPC version, so basically until they write a i686 version, you won't be able to use the new intel Mac for Rosetta.

Hi Mod

on this page https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_status.php

this part of the text donīt seem right for Rosetta as we donīt have more

than 1 to cruch a result.

Validator: Validates Rosetta@home results by comparing them with similar results returned by other users. If enough results for the same workunit have been returned, the validator compares the data and issues credit to all responsible users accordingly

I received an e-mail telling me that a post of mine has been moved from it's original thread to another as it was off topic.

The original thread is this one where the OP is asking for reasons not to support Rosetta/BOINC etc.

I believe my post, which I quote below, was entirely on topic.
A recurrent theme I've come across in a number of places is the somewhat cynical belief that someone, somewhere is "making money/gaining patents/supporting the US military" out of the freely given resource.

This was true of course in the United Devices type setup.

It has now been moved to this thread which discusses UNIX and Linux porting issues, and where it is totally off topic.

I request an explanation.

I apologize for the confusion this has caused. The owner of the thread requested in this post that all posts in the thread above a certain posting be moved to another thread as off topic. Your post was in fact above the posting where the line was drawn.

At the time, I did not read every post involved as a filter for that process (he did), but now that I have read them with that in mind, your post was part of the discussion related to porting of software. Taken out of context from the tread topic "Reasons some people avoid BOINC projects", it might appear to be related. However within the context the post was offered, I believe the thread owner was correct in his evaluation.

You of course are free to post the idea again within the context of the "Reasons some people avoid BOINC projects" discussion. If I hear no objections, I have no reason to get involved.

your post was part of the discussion related to porting of software.

I can see no way my post could have been construed to be part of the UNIX/Linux porting debate and request further explanation as to how it could be so. My post was a simple and legitimate reply to the OP's question.

The owner of the thread asked that I move the post as not topical and I did.

A part of the porting discussion involved possible misuse for profit of source code released by the projects. Your post appears to respond directly to that part of the discussion.

If the owner of the thread has misread the intention of your post then as I said you can repost it.

But the answer to your question is and will always be, the owner of the thread asked it be moved as off topic and it was. The owner of any thread in this forum can do the same.

In short you are shooting the messenger.

Adrian, please accept my apologies. There were 20 other posts around yours that were off topic and we just didn't notice yours in their midst. Please see my last post.

I require some assistance as my graphics screen seems to have gone on holiday. All I have is my BOINC manager which shows I'm still crunching for Rosetta. That's great, but I miss the graphics screen. Does anyone know how to fix this? I tryed re-downloading the program with no joy.

Forgive my asking, but have you tried rebooting? In some cases that has restored graphic functions.

I'm pretty new here, but if you are interested in getting more people to run BOINC, why not make it into a kind of online game such as kingsofchaos.com? Those games have hundreds of thousands of users and I'm sure you could get some serious computing from them. I'd even be willing to donate some time to programming if needed.

Well, It is s good idea, but do you have some kind of scenario? I have no idea how you would convert Rosetta into a game. I don't mean the coding, I mean the game itself. They all have some goal, and an action path to get to the goal, that can be put into some kind of cooperative or competitive path.

I did as well and it didn't help. What apparently did help is leaving it alone for past two days, because I came home from work to find the screen running. So, hooray to the mysterious genie living in my pc, or whatever! Thanks...I appreciate your kind effort.

Q. Which ports does Rosetta@Home need open?

A. Port 80 (http) is used for most communications with the project servers. Port 443 (https) is used if the password is being exchanged . Ports 1043 and 31416 are used for local control as well as for remote control of a BOINC client. 1043 is preferred and 31416 is a fall back. Unless you are RPC'ing over the Internet don't open 1043 and 31416 in your non-local firewall specifically for BOINC.
https isn't used to exchange the password, the password isn't even sent, only a hash of the password (use Ethereal to see for yourself), rosetta using http by default, will have the hash sent on port 80

the newer boinc clients use port 31416 by default now

to communicate with project servers ports shouldn't need to be opened, unless a firewall/router is really dumb, any connection from the client-side should be allowed to pass (and it's returning data), a software firewall might prompt the user to allow boinc to access the internet/manager, but this is a software-level thing, not a port-level thing

i'll update this in the wiki as well :)
