good evening everyone!

a new forum has been created to be a gathering place for those of us who choose to run rosetta. we hope to make it as welcoming as we possibly can, and invite anyone and everyone here to stop by and say hello.....chat about anything or nothing, or get an answer to a question. the board is divided into sections for member to member support, a knowledge base (please feel free to share what you know) team threads (mudslinging encouraged).....no womens' mud wrestling as yet since GP is missing, but look for the first bouts when she gets back, along with a general chat (both clean and rowdy) and of course jokes.

Although an unoffical forum we would appreciate a look in sometimes from a more official source. We hope eventually, we`re relatively new, to have most of the old teams from FAD over at our forum which is a lot lighter in a technical sense than here. We are and have been dedicated crunchers for sometime but often enjoy the lighter side of life.

We look forward to your presence.

Inclined to agree with David. At another forum issues of consequence are certain to be discussed. People who do not visit the new forum will not benefit from the discussion.

Hi David, I can understand your viewpoint well enough and if this is your idea of a good forum fair enough, I`ve no argument. Howether many of us have been crunching for a good many years and have got used to having a number of things that are missing here at this board. If that`s not your style, that`s fair enough.

We have a lot more to offer in the way of community spirit than appears here, IMHO. We encourage the team spirit and this has in the past led to many, many upgrades in the cause.

Not one person will state you have to go there, we give you the opportunity of at least a visit, if you don`t like it we won`t keep you.....honest. It`s in it`s infancy at present but a lot of people from FAD will be taking root after the holiday season finishes.

I apologise profusely that my dislike of this board and it`s layout has so obviously offended you and that you feel threatened that I`ve setup a seperate board. Sorry.

Mr. David Baker was eager enough to openly enter our FAD forum to take time to encourage us to come to Rosetta. Computerwise we`ve a lot of power. We prefer howether the community based forums rather than this.

This is the Official board. It is howether not to everyones taste and I am simply stating that there is an alternate that maybe is. As I stated below if you feel threatened by this I apologise.

Are there rules against setting up another board ? No didn`t think so, free speech and all that. My machines are crunching the same project as yours, I am simply offering something added and you`re offering what ?

No preview, no smilies, no quick linking drop downs, no last person post to a thread, no daily or since last visit quick view, no pretty colours ;),
Worse still, Split Help/Support/suggestions to 'chat' which causes confusion and the support and stuff to spill over (to chat) hence causing it to get spread about.

It's not about FaD, it'll be about having a nice forum for Rosetta people to go to.

Although if I remember newer BOINC based forum software is in the works (and Rosetta have said they'll add features if someone can tell them how)

I don't think external boards are a "threat" - they're common with teams, many teams have their own external boards. That having been said, anyone _on_ those external boards should realize that they can't expect any "official" presence there - the staff has enough trouble keeping up with _these_ boards. So anything that requires an official response, someone will need to post back over here...

The "downside" to having multiple boards is that unless a significant number of people monitor BOTH, some important information may appear on one but not the other. Either a report of a problem from a user that should be seen here, or a report from the project that people there would be interested in. The BOINC Synergy boards, just as an example, re-posts anything that appears in the Technical News of any of the projects that team runs, and any major issues that are brought up there, are reported back to the project in question by a "semi-official spokesperson".

The "upside" is that the external boards can run any board software you prefer, and have many more "user-friendly" features than there is time for the developers to put into this software.

Personally, I have more of a problem with changing _between_ board software, than I do with putting up with the missing features here; it seems like every non-BOINC board I go to requires an entirely different skillset to navigate. And if we can get rid of the "Q&P" section and go to straight forums like this for everything, I think it'll be easier to keep the threads at least in the right places, if not on-topic.

Bill I thankyou for that neutral viewpoint.

Although I stated we would appreciate a look in from a more official person, I wasn`t expecting monitoring of the board. We are more than capable of coming and finding an official source if we have trouble, it was merely a suggestion that someone may like to come across and let US know we`re valued once in a while. We do not expect special treatment.

As you say boards are made to different peoples tastes. I merely offered an alternative that a lot of crunchers coming to Rosetta from other projects will be used to. Rosetta, as is stated, is a fairly young project, some of us have been walking the boards a long time and are used to something different to this.

No offence was meant by this one thread, it`s not that we spammed the place, nor are we twisting arms. I really cannot see the problem.

I wasn't offended or threatened, I simply see no need to duplicate effort. If this board isn't pretty enough for you by all means start your own. I care about content not fluff and reading one board per project and one team board keeps me busy enough.

With my best face put on :) it's my perspective you appear to want to live in your own comfort zone much the same way some Seti Classic folks didn't like moving over to Seti Boinc and still live in the past. I understand the allure of the comfort zone, but as I said before, something of consequence is certain to be discussed and no one but FaD ex-patriots will benefit from it. And though I feel welcomed to your new endeavor I have enough forums to visit already (my wife complains I spent too much on it).

I'm not trying to dissuade you, only inform why I won't be visiting you forum. Best wishes anyway.

Careful, your true colours are beginning to show.

I just firmly believe that you should use whatever forum/boards are offered by whatever project you attach to, Boinc or non-Boinc. It may not be as robust as you would like but it's official. Having read many threads over time I get the impression that no one is satisfied with anything unless they can remodel it to their own personal specifications. Trouble is, everyone wants something different.

Correct.

Content is everything - the other stuff is pure fluff. I turn off everything I can - avatars, signatures, images. I get pure content. Nice. Readable. I haven't had any issues finding posts or following threads. There's plenty of forum options. You can see at a glance which threads have unread posts.

All the BOINC projects share the same forum software - it's part of and integrated with the project database. A couple have added their own tweaks, but it's still the same BOINC-supplied package.

BTW - did you ask BOINC and Rosetta if you could use their logos and names on a non-official forum?
